What causes Stretch Marks?
Stretch Marks occur when the dermis, the middle layer of your skin, is stretched to a point where its’ elasticity breaks down. This causes internal bleeding along with tissue inflammation. This gives the raised red/purple look to newly formed Stretch Marks.
Stretch Marks are extremely common and often occur in pregnancy due to the stretching of the skin. During this process, pregnancy hormones soften the collagen ligaments in the pelvis resulting in the softening of skin collagen also. This means that stretch marks form more easily.
Also commonplace in people who continually gain and lose weight where fat piles on and off. Sorry not good news is it?
In time Stretch Marks fade to silvery white squiggles but they can still remain un-slightly and a reason to avoid the beach in summer.
